Kathy Kelley is Savannah Bound
Hey everyone. I'm pleased to announce that I'm playing a pair of great gigs at the end of this week in Savannah, Ga.
First up is a fundraiser for the Tybee Post Theater on Tybee Island (right outside of Savannah). If you've never had the pleasure to visit the historical and beautiful island, then take my word for it, it's a lovely place. The folks down there have invited me to play in support of their drive to refurbish the Tybee Post theater. Check out all the details here.
Then on September 2nd, I'm very happy to announce that I'll be headlining The Savannah Folk Society's "First Friday for Folk Music".

First Friday for Folk Music is a production of the Savannah Folk Music Society and is held the first Friday of each month at First Presbyterian Church at 520 Washington Avenue, Savannah, Georgia. It is smoke-free, alcohol-free and family-friendly. There is a recommended donation of $2 per person. Beverages and homemade fresh baked goods are available for purchase. Festivities start at 7:30 PM and run until about 10:30 PM. $2 recommended donation.Opening up the show will be local favorite singer-songwriter Jan Spillane,
Playing piano and guitar, Jan Spillane is an energetic, true southern troubadour who has honed a trademark blend of folk, jazzy/blues, soulful, country-influenced pop called “The Key of Jan.” Since versatility is what Spillane is all about, she fits nicely into the Americana genre. Vocally, she literally sounds like no one else, and her desire to bend and warp established genres is what makes her a wonderful songwriter. Over the course of 14 years, Jan has released four impressive albums, and in October 2010, she released her first single, Good as Gold, and has headed back into the studio with more than a few projects, including Blue Canvas, which will be released in the Spring of 2012.I'd love to see old friend out there, and I can't wait to make ton's of new ones!

Fete Greenville Spotlights Kathy Kelley
Fete Greenville, a multimedia online magazine that looks into all facets of Greenville art and culture, has featured me in their July issue with an article by none other than Sit-N-Spin producer Matt Morgan. I can't thank Matt of Fete enough for my inclusion. That hold especially true when Matt says lovely things like this...

The Reviews (Review) Is In
I've never had anyone review my work before so I won't even act like I wasn't nervous, but Myles over at WeAreTheUpstate is making me blush....
Thanks Myles and another big thanks to WeAretheUpstate.
"If you’re reading this, you’ve no doubt seen our Couch Surfing sessions with Kathy Kelly (and if you haven’t, what’re you waiting for?!). At the WATU camp, we’ve been eagerly awaiting Buck Up Little Camper, Kelley’s newest offering. Backed by a full band for the record, her songs feel fuller than her solo performances. This is no slight to Kelley at all, but taking the smoky guitar and vocals and adding drums, lead and rhythm guitars and harmonica here and there aid Kelley in giving each individual track a more distinct identity.
“Shot At The Moon” begins the record at a soft, steady pace. The jaunty melody and blues-inspired guitar work eases the listener in while the gentle refrain doesn’t so much beat you over the head with infectiousness as it does invite you to join in agreement that “everybody wants their shot at the moon.”
Storytelling lyrics in songs like “Cleveland,” “7th Daughter,” and “Boxers and Thieves” showcase Kelley’s lyrical prowess; however, it’s her voice that remains to be the true star of the album. It carries the strength and whimsical changes of a blues singer yet maintains rooted in an Americana folk style. Most admirable is the singer’s ability to take elements from these genres and blend them together in her songs.
“Scarecrow,” for example, contains a melodic structure found in many mid-tempo folk songs. Yet Kelley will start up specific sections with a louder, deeper, more concentrated sound than when she quickly quips “after a girl has seen Emerald City, how you gonna keep her at home?” in the song’s final verse.
Not only a display of talent, but these change-ups of pace and vocal style maintain the album’s freshness. Though the general tone and pace doesn’t change too much during the record, the intricate switches in style keep the ears satisfied. None of the album’s ten tracks are wasted, and the record as a whole is extremely well produced.
For those who prefer soulful, blues-driven music featuring one of the strongest voices you’ll find in the Upstate, do yourself a favor and grab a copy of Buck Up Little Camper. Hers is a powerful voice that hasn’t been heard enough and is guaranteed to impress you with her powerful collection of stories, memories, and musings. You can purchase it on all the normal outlets (iTunes, Amazon) and you can preview each of the album’s tracks on her LastFM page."
Thanks Myles and another big thanks to WeAretheUpstate.

Check out this Interview With Matt Morgan of Sit-N-Spin Studios
Hey, as you may or may not know, I recorded 100 % of Buck Up Little Camper at Sit- N-Spin Studios right here in Greenville, SC. WeAreTheUpstate.com recently sat down with Matt, and he had some nice things to say about working on the album.

4. What project have you been most proud of?
That’s hard to say…obviously I love the projects where I write and sing my own songs, but recently I worked with an artist named Kathy Kelley. I ended up playing drums, bass, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, keyboard, and sang some back up. It was loads of fun and Kathy is so easy to work with…not to mention she’s a fantastic singer and can write one hell of a song.

Greenville songwriter Kathy Kelley’s lyrics are informed by the foothills she lives in and the mountains that surround her, but also her childhood years traveling as an Army brat. Since she started playing guitar at age fourteen with the express desire to write songs, there has been no looking back. Kathy played off and on with a few bands in the nineties, but she’s been playing solo for the last few years where she’s been delighting crowds at Music in the Woods and Sonny’s Sunday Songwriters. She’s been called “an extremely talented wordsmith” and that she has a “beautiful talent, voice and soul.”, but her focus is the same as it has always been, writing the best songs that she can.
